Apparently according to the spell check I’ve just invented a new word. Whether that’s true or not is impossible to know but I’ll enjoy the moment non-the-less. I stumbled upon the most remarkable story of mainstream media skullduggery today. It was a story about Fox News adding two photoshopped images to a article about the Capital Hill Autonomous Zone in Seattle (CHAZ). The CHAZ is an autonomous zone taken by protesters in the city which has drawn the ire and threats of Donald Trump to which the local Mayor has suggested they’re doing nothing wrong. Apparently they’re “ugly Anarchists”, he’s a bizarre man. The article then was attempting to discredit the autonomous zone with Fox News uploading these heavily edited images.

It is hard to believe that someone in a highly paid and responsible position in the Fox News studio looked at that image and thought it would acceptably pass scrutiny. It looks like I have attempted to edit it and I can’t edit. They’ve just clumsily stuck the gunman right on top of an image of the zone. It’s like they’ve not even tried.

This second image was from riots in the city at the end of May which had nothing to do with and was before the CHAZ existed. It is also incredibly lazy, they haven’t even got the proportions right. They attached images of burning vehicles too as you can see at the top of this article. For the sake of accuracy it’s just unfortunate that this particular image was from a riot in Minnesota.

It’s probably not worth getting into one about how full of shit the media are. That’s established. What makes this event worthwhile is how little effort they feel they need to put in. This isn’t just lazy, they don’t even need to care about keeping any pretence of accuracy. Yes they deleted it once awareness of it had been raised but they were still willing to put it out in the first place. Is it an indictment of them or does it suggest they haven’t the most discerning of subscribers. It is very hard to change the window you see society and the media through when you come across these kinds of images. They speak a thousand words. It all just seems so corrupt to the core. But you don’t need me to say it, just take one look at that attempt at news.

Another Political Pervert

Another day another pervert ousted in politics. Pervert may be a little strong but you shouldn’t try and seduce sixteen year olds when you’re twenty-two let alone when you’re forty-two. Maybe it is because they’re in the public eye so much and that they work in such a sneaky corrupt industry but politicians seem to get caught out in so many sex scandals. I must also commend Boris, or should I say Dominic Cummings, and Rupert Murdoch for such a perfectly executed political assassination. The night before Derek Mackay, the Scottish finance minister, is about to release the budget proposed by the Scottish Government, one already delayed because of shenanigans between the Scottish Parliament and Westminster, the Scottish Sun release their exclusive about him contacting a schoolboy who he thought was “cute” over a six month period. They’ve done him, they’ve taken him out. No matter what moral beliefs you hold on this it is undeniably a work of art. They have sat on this story and waited for the most opportune moment to release it. A future leader of the SNP apparently. Not anymore.

If anything though it does highlight the lack of neutrality in the press and the influence of people like Rupert Murdoch within our political system. This piece though is not going to be about one of my favourite topics; that of a perennially corrupt media. It is more just about being an acknowledgement of what they’ve done and despite the fact I dislike these people immensely it is important to be able to tip your hat to them when you can see how well they’ve played something. Saying that I also don’t have much time for any forty-two year old who harasses school children so morally this one is all over the place.

Politicians are a remarkable people though and it shows the lure of power that despite the obvious dangers to a free and happy life so many get involved in that murky world. These next five years are going to be incredibly interesting for the objective observers, and a mix of great and terrifying for everyone else. For every person who is horrified that Boris is ripping up a centuries old rulebook of tradition there will be another delighted about it. Change needs to happen and with current events in Britain, as well as around the world, this is clearer now more than ever. People are angry and when emotive responses like that are your main driver you are also easy to manipulate. The fear then is that while everything needs a good shake-up, when it’s this mob doing the shaking we perhaps should be a little concerned. And not only that, but while we can tip our hats to their work, never forget that this and worse is exactly what they’re capable of.

Jewish Iranians

There is a real dearth of interesting and balanced reporting in these days of polarised corporate media. There is one magazine that I doubt can be classed as independent but which I have been enjoying recently and that is The Economist. It doesn’t appear to sit on either side of the spectrum and doesn’t seem to espouse a centrist position either which is even more reassuring. It reports world events and these can range from small pieces on which countries have the most dangerous roads to immediate and large stories about today’s corrupt attempt at bringing ‘peace’ to Palestine. They also have a pretty active podcast channel and it is this that is the driver behind my mentioning of them.

Today there was an interview with Nicolas Pelham, their Middle East correspondent, who when visiting Iran in July last year was detained at the airport and forced to stay for another seven weeks. It was an incredibly interesting interview and he gave a version of Iran that is rarely seen in the media. It seemed neither pro nor anti Iran, and while he explained the genuine dangers he was in and the realities of life in a dictatorship, he also painted a picture of a welcoming, hospitable and open people. This is the version I have felt having met Iranians in the past and from stories of those who have travelled the country. He was under a sort of house arrest; he had questioning in the morning and then would spend the afternoon and evening exploring Tehran. He was given a mobile phone, which he knew was bugged but which he could use to call home and he says that perversely he felt freer in those weeks than he did at any time in the week he had initially only planned on being there. He also admits that in no way was his ordeal comparable to other foreigners detained there such as Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliff, the British Iranian woman who has been detained in solitary confinement in Iranian jail for nearly four years.

What is interesting though is that he is Jewish and has spent time reporting from Jerusalem. He believed at first that this may have been a factor in his arrest but questioning never followed that route in any serious way. While there he visited the Jewish community in Tehran. It numbers about eight to ten thousand, which is about ten percent of it’s peak prior to the Arab-Israeli War, and is the largest Jewish community outside of Israel in the Middle East. When speaking with members of the community he discovered they feel safer there than in major western cities such as Paris or London and are largely left alone. He himself said it was more dangerous for him being British than Jewish in Iran.

The importance of this cannot be overlooked in regards geopolitics. The Press reports that Iran has vowed to obliterate Israel, doesn’t recognise their right to exist and that Israelis and Jewish people are in constant danger of Iranian attack at any moment. This is portrayed as anti-semitism and that the Iranian government simply hates Israel existing because they are Jewish. This seems to be at odds to the reality of this comparatively large Jewish community within Iran. Really it’s another indictment of a corrupt media, that to attack Israel is to attack Judaism, but evidently it can’t be further from the truth. We saw this recently in the UK with the constant anti-semitic slurs against pro-Palestinian Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. He refused to agree to include as part of a definition of anti-semitism in the party’s charter; that criticism of Israel and anti-semitic attacks on the Jewish community were one and the same thing.

This was a rare and honest conversation on Iran, and one with someone who was in danger of experiencing their worst tendencies. It left you in no doubt of the potential perils which can await within the country but also gave a wonderful endorsement of the people and culture, which also included his minders and guards incidentally. This is a link to the podcast for anyone interested in listening to it. Sometimes it is refreshing to experience reporting that doesn’t appear to be pushing any one thing more than the truth.
