Suicide, Abortion and The Donald

One thing with writing in here each day is that it makes you take notice of interesting stories or news you discover online. Usually that evolves into an entire piece but sometimes two stories can become one. Sometimes I just want to make a short comment on something without having to turn it into a whole piece. When I do I risk dragging it out or am forced to spend time researching something enough to write a decent article. That isn’t always the case because if it’s politics or football I’m straight in there. Suicides in Japan though, what the hell do I know about that. But this being the internet, I’ll make a comment…

I was going to make some kind of statement about suicide being part of Japanese culture. Or at least that we’re looking at a situation in Japan through western lenses. However Japan only has the thirtieth highest rate of suicides in the world, above it are half of Africa it would seem and other countries like Belgium, Uruguay, India, and Russia. Importantly though South Korea comes in tenth and while the two countries culture and history are different I will make a potentially ignorant statement and suggest Korean culture is the closest to what is an incredibly unique one in Japan. Again, as per previous pieces, national and cultural stereotypes are stupid and a waste of time but we make them anyway for the sake of understanding. Perhaps it’s the link to Samurai killing themselves which makes us think it’s so high or the stories of Japanese overworking. Saying that Koreans are even guiltier of that apparently which may explain the higher rate. Anyway, this whole suicidal ramble was in response to a series of seemingly high profile suicides in Japan recently.

And then Trump, fuck the man’s pushing everyone even closer to a second civil war. I mentioned this fear previously and when I asked an American friend about it it was dismissed as something just going one in certain parts of the country. But still, a new Judge on the Supreme Court that will tilt it even further on a conservative slant. The likely affect on abortion rights, or Roe Vs Wade. It is happening everywhere seemingly but America is becoming even more divisive with every big moment. This election coming up is potentially going to be like a bomb going off. It’s not too crazy to envisage a civil war. They do have a history of such things. It is still remarkable that religion plays any part in the slightest in politics or how a country exists. I guess it affects cultural behaviours and then political ones too. The accusations thrown at the Middle-East, Islam and Sharia Law seem infinitely hypocritical.

Staying on Trump, the news that he only paid $750 over two years in taxes. Sounds like he needs a better accountant. That and him making losses all these years. I won’t feign surprise, that’s how these things work. It will have little bearing on an already entrenched vote. He has incriminated Ivanka though, her being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in consultancy fees while also being on the board is an entirely illegal act. That should be interesting although they don’t take down their own, not properly anyway. And ‘they’ are not divided by Democrat and Republic leanings. That’s just the game for us to play.

A Burning America

There was once a time when I was mulling over the idea of going to America for a friends summer wedding. Summer has been and gone and the wedding became a tiny event with just a few family. I think we all know which virus we can blame for that change of plans. I was thinking too about maybe visiting him at some point later this year or spring next year and going on a road trip somewhere. He’s good for road trips. In another unrelated plan I thought about going to Seattle and completing a coding bootcamp course. Coding because I want to learn how to write it, bootcamps because they’re intense and good ways to learn and Seattle because it’s apparently quite a cool city and it’ll always be synonymous with Nirvana and the grunge music scene in my mind.

None of these things are probably going to happen. Partly I don’t want to go too far from the UK at the moment considering we have no idea what will happen with this virus over the winter. With the American government responding worse than ours somehow it doesn’t look like the most appealing place right now either. On top of that though it really does look like the country is descending into what can only be described as the early stages of it’s second civil war. Am I being hyperbolic? Perhaps. But taking a look at current events with another person being shot dead it does make you take notice and raise an eyebrow. A few days ago some little seventeen year old right-wing kid shot three people protesting on behalf of Black Lives Matter, after another unarmed black man was shot dead by police. Today, or maybe it was last night, a man was shot dead but this time he was marching with Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group taking part in counter protests.

A year or two ago these two sides of the ideological divide in America were squaring up to each other wearing armour and carrying bats. A few people turned up carrying guns but more to flaunt they could and as a warning that they had them than to actually use. Now they’ve started using them. This is currently an incredibly heated situation in a country awash with guns. At the moment, to say this could unfold with further violence and shooting is not an overly dramatic statement to make. It is an election year with an unstable leader willing to push and step over the boundaries of common practice in his determination to hold on to power. I’m not suggesting he’s about to lead a fascist military coup or become a dictator but he’s likely to incite an already incited populace. Really this could go anywhere. For the time being I know where I won’t be going.

Lebanese Politics & Scottish Education

Two issues today separated by geography and a multitude of other things. Lebanon seems completely fucked, the government has toppled and the western powers have offered $250 million dollars toward relief as an aid package. This of course on the proviso there are fundamental changes made within the country. This was demanded prior to the government collapsing and during protests so perhaps these changes have begun to be made. That is a lot of money but when the estimated bill for damages is currently at an estimated $12 billion, the sum offered seems like a spare change and it’ll be interesting to see whether the country is that desperate that they’ll accept them. Most likely help will come from Iran but they’re not exactly swimming with cash themselves so how this unfolds is anyone’s guess. Instinctively whenever I see an ‘event’ in the Middle East followed by protests and potential government/structural/regime change my life’s conditioning is that it is the the west meddling in and ruining another country.

Lebanon has serious issues in the immediate and medium term to deal with, having to endure someone else’s take on freedom is probably not required right now. Saying all of that these protests could be completely organic and those involved may be fighting for something completely independent of anything offered by outside forces be they western and Israeli, or Iranian. The country has a finely balanced sectarian structure, although it also has led to high levels of corruption, which has so far prevented another civil war for thirty years. If the country does become the latest battle ground in the Middle East Hezbollah will certainly not go down without a fight and it could become as bloody and destructive as what has happened and is continuing to happen in Syria. Or it won’t and they will get the desired support from the IMF without too many self-destructive conditions and they’ll rebuild. Really though I’m someone who has never been to Lebanon, despite really wanting to for a few years now, and who knows little beyond reasonably unsubstantiated conjecture. So let’s see.

What I do know though is that Scotland’s education system has struggled in the years the SNP have been in power. This is the second point, and it’ll be quick. They have undeniably done a lot for Scotland as a party but education seems to be one sorry mess after another. Inexplicably they have moved closer to the English education system and it’s higher levels of exam assessments despite evidence suggesting that not be the best approach. Standards have dropped as a result. Then there is this debacle over lowering students grades because of concerns they were too high across the board, but not lowering them evenly, seemingly doing so more in disadvantaged areas. To lower them is political. To lower them disproportionately is probably down to the knowledge of the pressure from those with influence in wealthy schools and potentially political too but that is less clear. Either way it is a stupid own goal in an already beleaguered part of government. Nicola Sturgeon has stood up, accepted the mistake and reversed it which is a refreshing move from a politician but it should never have got to that. The Tory propaganda machine will be going into overdrive as English results are released on Thursday and assuming they don’t go and make the same mistake. Surely that would be beyond incomprehension if they did. Which means it is safe to say they most likely will.

The Right Attack

In an entirely predictable move the civil war in the Labour Party reared it’s ugly head once more. Rebecca Long-Bailey the Shadow Education Secretary was sacked from her position today by the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer after she retweeted an article which suggested the Minneapolis police had learnt the method of kneeling on someones neck to subdue them, from seminars in Israel by the the Israeli Defence Force (IDF). This was not the entirety of the article but was a point made within it. This reignited the anti-semitism debate within the Labour Party and Sir Keir was quick to show he wasn’t like the previous Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn who the British Press spent years smearing as anti-semitic. This being Jeremy Corbyn the anti-racism and anti-anythingthatdiscriminatedagainstanyone campaigner. Rebecca Long-Bailey was the main challenger to Starmer in the leadership race and represented the left wing of the party. Her position on the Shadow Cabinet no doubt being an attempt to placate those who didn’t support him and an attempt to present himself as a unifying force. Her sacking was always only ever going to be a matter of time.

It is impossible to cover everything in the space of five hundred words. This is an enormous issue. Sir Keir represents the right of the Labour party, or as is more apt the Tory-lite element. He has barely challenged the government on their negligent attempt at doing anything worthwhile in the fight against the coronavirus. The press now all of a sudden seem to have no problem at all with the Labour party after being positively terrified of them for the last few years. The Board of Deputies of British Jews who are a right wing group with connections to the Conservative party and who the British press decided represent the whole of British Judaism have decided they like him. Perhaps his politics is not that far from theirs? And not to mention the fact that they managed to get the definition of anti-semitism rewritten to include criticism of Israel. Which is ultimately all she did. I don’t know whether the Israelis trained the Minneapolis police but it doesn’t matter. The story can be factually inaccurate but she’s not been sacked for that. Various far right groups may use criticism of Israel as a thinly veiled excuse to attack the Jewish people but it’s pretty obvious when that is happening. This was not that. This was the silencing of any criticism of the Israeli State, and the culling of a political opponent in the process.

The problem with British politics is that it currently offers few differing options, the same as in America with the Democrats and Republicans. Ultimately they represent the same thing, as do the Tory Party, the Liberal Democrats and now Labour under Sir Keir. Whether you agreed with Corbyns politics, at least he offered a different approach and attempted to hold a corrupt government to account. That cannot and I doubt ever will be said of Starmer who is proving to be nothing more than another establishment stooge. I was devastated when Corbyn lost, like many were, but I won’t be voting for Labour at the next election. I most likely won’t be voting for anyone. You’re not voting for change when they’re all offering a continuation of the same thing, the very thing which is the actual problem in the first place. Today’s events merely underline this. It appears we’re back to the great fraud of Democracy.

Fucking Fascists

I wrote a piece earlier about Greece and the current situation with the refugees crossing from Turkey and attacks on them by the fascists. Fascist is a term thrown around far too easily, I should know I’ve been one of those people calling everyone fascist for years, but in Greece it is genuinely a word you can use to describe people. Greece has actual fascists, everywhere does don’t get me wrong, but in Greece they are numerous, hold varying positions of power and the police are absolutely riddled with them like a disease. The piece I wrote earlier though turned into a rant because these fucking morons are arseholes and they piss my off. I’ve met them, not too often but enough to know how they think. Also Greeks in general can be quite volatile, the possibilities of what could happen in Greece worry me. They’re also just human and I love them for this, they’re genuine in their own way. I am really struggling to stop this turning into a rant again…oh fuck it I’ll just paste the first one below…

Greece appears to be fucked at the moment. Fucked doesn’t appear to be a strong enough word but I’ll use it anyway. Turkey has opened the gates to Europe using people for political gain and power, while Greece is attempting to shut them also for political gain and power. The Turks are exaggerating the numbers they’ve let through and the Greeks deny they’ve let through many at all. There have been videos online of all sorts of actions against refugees this last week. The Greek coastguard firing live rounds into the water near a boat they had previously tried to sink with a stick and turn over by ramming. When you have about seventy people on a boat designed for fifteen and only just above the waterline it is remarkable that didn’t happen. It is a shocking video and had it not been for political point scoring by the Turkish coastguard who are guilty of the same and worse, it would never have been shown. These things have been going on for the last few years in that narrow strip of water between Greece and Turkey but just away from the cameras. You then have refugees, NGOs and foreign volunteers being attacked on the beaches by roving bands of fascists, as the police look on doing nothing. The police themselves in Greece have an horrendous reputation for being indiscriminate racist morons who will only make the situation worse. New Democracy, the right-wing government in power since last summer doing all they can to attack left-wing squats, attack refugees and turn the islands into prison camps. Greece has a rich history of right-wing military dictatorships in the last hundred years and one thing they loved doing was throwing communists on prison islands to die, history repeats itself yet again. Moria camp on Lesvos has a capacity of three thousand but contains something like twelve thousand at present. I don’t blame the locals on the island for being pissed off at the national government for wanting to build more and larger (prison) camps on Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Kos but as per usual they’re going after the wrong people. The reality in Greece is that the fascists are real and they’re very much at the front of an angry populace. It is not hyperbole. Once there was Golden Dawn the far-right party but to win power New Democracy just appealed to the lighter elements of their message and then gave them free reign once they came to power. I remember when I was living there it was pretty clear that it wouldn’t take much for Greece to descend into another bloody civil war and with the right-wing violence of this last week just feels like another step in that direction. An incredibly polarised country in which they hate each other. Tourists always say about how nice and welcoming the Greeks are and it’s true, they are great at looking after guests, as well as their own families but outside of this they can be total arseholes to each other. Give them a divisive issue when they’re already struggling with no work or money and a country that is falling apart and doesn’t give a shit about them and the violence is inevitable. Who gets hurts, the innocent people once again. As the EU commends Greece for shutting the gates to Europe it ignores the abuse of innocents, of children being tear gassed, women being clubbed and boats being rammed. The Greek government has said they will stop taking asylum requests, I may be corrected here but surely there must be some kind of international law they’re breaking with that. But commend them our governments will. Commend the fascist thugs terrorising with impunity they will. Commend the brutalising of an already beaten populace they will. This has been a little bit of a unthought rant and I’m wary of doing so. But I also know people who have been threatened and attacked. This is a rant because it’s an emotive issue and it scares me and I worry about people I know in Greece. As I said a few days ago about the fascists in Spain, in Greece they have been and continue to be just as real. The Nazis were never short of collaborators, neither were the British and Americans backing the right wing in the civil war of the late forties. So nothing has changed in seventy years, it’s the same old bullshit as our governments feed the monster before distancing themselves once the job is done and letting everyone else pick up the pieces. Fuck them, that makes the Brits collaborators, the EU, everyones a collaborator. We’re all collaborating with right wing extremism because they’re doing in our name. How much do we love the EU now? Perhaps they’re not that perfect after all. Blood on everyones hands.
